A common way to face tank shaped slam is to achieve 100% phys damage taken as ele damage with some increased max resistance. Iirc Uber shaper slam has around 16k phys damage and when you have 100% phys taken as ele and 80 max res you will take 16000*20%=3200 damage, not counting other guard skill.

I always kept it offhand because it would lower my resistances a little and wasn't worth the investment to max them again especially with getting equal resistances via the wise oak. Best example is the uber uber elder fight: Citing from the wiki the Shaper balls "Deals 5639 to 8458 Cold Damage" and the Elder ice projectiles "deals 5006 to 7509 Cold Damage". I dont get, why the lower DMG Spell does literaly 3-4 times more damage to me. The elder only hits me with 1-2 projectiles, while the shaper sends 10 straight into my face.
